Lugradio

Filed under: Sean @ 8:14 pm

I had a listen to the latest Lugradio today and have to say it’s well worth the bandwidth. For those who don’t know, Lugradio is a podcast by a Linux User Group based in England (Wolverhampton, I think). When they’re not talking about Kiora they’re discussing Linux and all things opensource. In the latest one (season 2 - episode 17) they talk about whether we should ditch Linux and go with something more up-to-date.

The shows are hilarious and well worth listening to. Pop over to http://www.lugradio.org/ and take a look. Be warned: sometimes the language get a bit “colorful” :-)

Wikis - they’re greeeeat!

I’ve got a wiki installed on one of my servers which I use as a store for all those little bits of information that I pick up. They’re great for just banging text into and then cross referencing it.

I’ve got the MediaWiki installed. It’s the one used to power the Wikipedia. It’s a doddle to install (you’ll be up and running in 5 minutes) and really easy to use. It uses MySql as the backend which isn’t hard to get hold of. I’m running Ubuntu so it’s just a case of running apt-get.

It’s got a lot of editing features which can be a bit daunting at first, but once you pick up the basic markup tags you’re off and running. There’s a wiki (well duh!) that covers everything you need to know.

What’s it all about??

Filed under: Sean @ 9:55 am

I suppose if I going to inflict my babbling onto the internet then I might as well tell you what this blog is going to be about…

I’ve recently started to put more effort into learning Linux. I’m a developer based in England who’s been doing Windows NT C++ programming for the last 10 years so it’s going to quite interesting. No more calls to WaitForMultipleObject for me :-) Still, I’m gonna have to start worrying about signals now :-(. Back to the point… this blog will be about my experiences getting to grips with all aspects of Linux. It’ll cover everything from the joys of programming to the fun(hmmmm) of Linux configuration via my views on the state of the IT world whenever the mood takes me ;-)

Well, after around 40 minutes of fiddling around it all seems to be up and running….
